LA FEMME: EN VOGUE

here i am, back in my beloved tiny studio after a whirlwind trip to texas to see my family. i’ve finally finished the griffin oil painting and am moving on to the next big project:
LA FEMME: EN VOGUE. this will be a re-imagined retrospective of working as a hollywood makeup artist over the past decade. painted on solid maple panels, these ladies offer a brief, almost candid moment that will give you a glimpse into the story of glamourous women in and on the periphery of the hollywood lifestyle.

here is a sneak peek at some watercolors that will also be a part of the collection:

yes, definitely some exciting new stuff on the horizon...
so check back soon!

A Red Carpet Makeover From Head to Toe
By Christina Heiser

At the recent red carpet premiere of What to Expect When You’re Expecting, the stars of the film including Jennifer Lopez, Anna Kendrick, and Cameron Diaz wowed with their gorgeous outfits and chic hair and makeup. Our sister site, WhatToExpect.com, gave one lucky fan, Tessica Trudell, from Wisconsin, the chance to attend the L.A. premiere and see the A-listers up close.
“The movie was so good! Hilarious, but touching. It really touched on what pregnancy is like in real life... and had plenty of comedy and love — the perfect combination,” says Tessica.
Before hitting the red carpet (and meeting Heidi Murkoff, author of the bestselling books the movie is based on), Tessica got glammed up for the star-studded evening with help from a celeb makeup artist and hairstylist.

“I adored my hair and makeup! I am such a girly-girl — I wouldn't mind having that done every day,” she says. “I felt so pretty when I was finally all ready, and I think that Jamie [my husband] agreed. He looked a bit star- struck by me... kind of like I remember him looking when he saw me just before prom in high school, and on our wedding day.”
Stacey Rae Barnes, stylist at Byu-ti Hair Therapy, a Pureology salon, and Amber Griffin, celebrity makeup artist, spilled their secrets for transforming Tessica for her red carpet moment.

When it came to her hair, Barnes explains that Tessica wanted to look like a more glamorous version of herself. Tessica has naturally curly hair, so Barnes softened the curls into voluminous waves for a red carpet feel.
To create the look, Barnes applied Pureology’s Nourishing Nectar to the mid-shaft and ends of Tessica’s hair and Pureology Root Lift to the crown of her head while her hair was wet. “These two products gave me a great base to start with, creating soft volume and fantastic hold,” says Barnes. Before she set Tessica’s curls, Barnes prepped her strands with Pureology’s Strengthening Control Hairspray.
Barnes used a rod curling iron (one without a clamp) to create waves. To use a clamp-less curling iron, Barnes advises keeping the nose of the iron down and your elbow up, and always go away from the face. “Once the curl is set and still warm, lightly tug on the end of the curl to soften into a wave,” she says.
To finish the style, Barnes ran a dime size amount of Pureology Cuticle Polisher through Tessica’s waves to banish flyaways, and then applied a final spray of Pureology Supreme Control Hairspray to make the waves last.

As for her makeup, Griffin prepped Tessica’s skin before applying any color. “The most important thing (especially in Hollywood) is skin,” she says, “so prepping the skin is an absolute must before applying the makeup.” Griffin started by using Neutrogena’s One Step Gentle Cleanser followed by Neutrogena Naturals Multi-Vitamin Nourishing Moisturizer. “This ensures adequate moisture for hours and keeps the makeup looking fresh,” she says. Griffin then prepped Tessica’s lips with Neutrogena Naturals Lip Balm.
After creating a flawless canvas, Griffin used an airbrush foundation to ensure that Tessica’s skin tone looked even and natural on camera.

Achieve natural-looking skin at home with Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup.
Griffin then accentuated Tessica’s beautiful eyes. “First, I contoured her eyes using a brown eye shadow similar to the darkest color in her hair, then I accented the lids with a fresh green color to brighten her eyes and add a flare for a red carpet look,” she says. Griffin finished Tessica’s eyes with smoky black liner and Neutrogena’s Healthy Volume Mascara. On Tessica’s lips, Griffin mixed a peachy-orange lip color specifically for her.
To ensure that Tessica was glowing when she walked down the red carpet, Griffin mixed a couple drops of Neutrogena’s body oil into their sesame body lotion and applied it to her arms and legs.
“Not only did Tessica look amazing, she felt amazing and ready to walk the red carpet for the first time with confidence, knowing that everyone would see her shine,” says Griffin.

Ruby Sparks- the new love of your life!

I gotta say that this ended up being such a cool day hanging and shooting with Zoe Kazan, the star of the movie RUBY SPARKS (also starring Annette Bening and Paul Dano). Coming from FOX Searchlight and the directors of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris), RUBY SPARKS is definitely going to be a well done work of art. Also, Zoe wrote the screenplay...how great is that?! This little gem of a film opens TOMORROW!! GO SEE IT!!

With love and lipstick...

2012 has started out with a bang! Well...more like a CRASH!!!! It seems as though a lot of people, myself included, have had a rough go of it for these first few weeks of the year. What's going on?!? Despite well meaning thoughts from my Topanga friends about the new year really beginning in February with the Chinese New Year or the end of the year (or world, rather) with the Mayan calendar, or how I just need to drink more tea, meditate or hold crystals... it’s hard to make sense of it all. Everyone has their way of dealing with life when everything seems to all blow up at once. So what do you do? I wonder if we are really on track? Or is there even really a “track” to be on?

Somehow it seems that Los Angeles likes to give you a good, solid punch in the face every once in a while to make sure you are paying attention. Unfortunately, I am not excluded from a good beating now and again. (metaphorically speaking, of course!) I will agree with my beloved Oscar Wilde when he said, “Experience is one thing you can’t get for nothing.” I would not give up one single thing for the amazing experiences that I’ve had and the fascinating people I have met along the way. I accept it all- the good and the bad- and say “thank you.” I suppose the only real “track” is one that you set for yourself...and it’s gotta be wonderfully, authentically yours...so let’s keep on walking, shall we?

Being that it is January and the year is still new, I am ever more committed to continue along my path, choosing beauty and love...and of course lipstick!
